Visit with a Retired Chief
Recently Mike WB3EQW, Chief Rooster,
and Carolyn had an opportunity to visit Henry W3GYC, Rooster #302. Mike
sent the following report and pictures:
We are back from Vermont. Lots of people were
interested in seeing and hearing from Retired Chief Rooster Henry Aldrich.
Henry was one of first Roosters of the Year. We found him. Attached are
three pictures of Henry and Betty and of course me. Hopefully, you know
who is who.

Henry is retired and living in a very nice
apartment in Richford, Vermont. This is very close to the Canadian border
and he has a great view of Jay Peak. We found Henry by visiting a
restaurant in Enosburg Falls, about 10 miles away, and asking if anyone
knew a guy who always wore black with a cowboy hat and boots. That made it
easy!
Turns out we were in the wrong town, but someone
still knew of him.
Henry had a heart problem a few months ago but had
a combination pace maker and defibrillator installed. He walks a little
everyday. Betty thinks he needs to walk more. She checks on him everyday,
sometimes twice. Henry's apartment is filled with pictures of children and
grand children. Betty's children include Henry in all their family outings
which he enjoys. He still has a big Rooster hanging on his wall. I don't
think he plans to return to the Ham Radio hobby. He is waiting for some
paperwork and he will be getting some good hearing aids which will allow
him to use the phone and visit better. He blames his deafness on the
engines in the blimps he flew as well as the C-130's.
When he gets the new hearing aids, I'll try to get
him on the net via a phone patch. It was great to see and visit him. He
says a special hello to all the Roosters. He is very happy that we were
able to return to Freedoms Foundation this year.
By the way, Henry and Betty's granddaughter, Sarah
Watson is Miss Vermont. She will be in the Miss America contest next
January from Las Vegas. She is a very accomplished concert pianist. Now we
have a reason to root for Miss Vermont.
It was fun to see the expression on Henry's face
when we knocked on his door. I guess he doesn't get much company from
Pennsylvania.
